Top 8 Dining Out Pet Peeves

I saw a recent article on Eater.com that asked readers about their biggest pet peeves when dining out and I thought I would share my list.

  1. Massive markups on wines. I know that there are lots of different costs associated with running a restaurant but charging me $11.00 for a 6 oz glass (plus tax and tip…) for the same stuff I can buy at $15.95 for a whole bottle really gives me the hint you don’t want me to come back again.

  2. Turn up the lights!! Maybe it’s all gone wrong with my eyes since I hit 50 but unless we’re “in the club” I should not need to turn on my cell phone light to see the menu.

  3. Charging me for extras. Just a little more hot sauce for my wings, extra pickles on my burger or chipotle mayo for my sweet potato frites. I’ve run across this a few times at different places, and every time it happens it just seems cheap to me, but I take comfort in knowing that I’ll never go back to those places.

  4. Tables jammed together. I’m not the biggest guy in the room, I never am, but it’s truly annoying when places jam the tables and chairs so close together that I have move my chair or sometimes even my table to let someone else in or out. I go out to relax; being jostled and bumped during dinner is truly annoying.

  5. Screaming kids at real restaurants. There are lots of kid friendly places to go, with lots of other kids, so please go there…It may sound cold and maybe even a little mean, but if your kids can’t behave or you choose not to tell them to behave then please take them out to a quick service restaurant or the drive through or hire a babysitter! We all want to have a good time when we go out and sadly sometimes your kids don’t help!

  6. People talking on their cell phones. If you must talk on the phone, take it outside!! I know we all have cell phones, I know we’re all busy and lots of us have our own businesses, but please I don’t care about how well you did in the football pool, the eleven things on your grocery list or if you’re free to go to your mother-in-law’s for dinner next Monday night.

  7. Dirty cutlery or crockery. I know this sounds simple, but it is astonishing the number of times I go out, cheap places, expensive ones, even chains, and it continues to happen. This problem is the simplest thing in the world to fix, just pay attention. Or pay the dishwasher and staff to pay attention; it’s not that hard…

  8. Dirty washrooms. Never forget that kitchens are much harder to clean than bathrooms are; there’s lots of nooks and crannies. If a place is content to let you see a dirty bathroom you can just imagine what might be going on in the kitchen…

What are your dining out pet peeves??
